Transforming Lives with Clean Water, Education & Opportunity

For more than a decade, the Rotary Club of Joliet has worked alongside partners in Malawi, Africa—one of the world’s most impoverished nations, yet widely known as “The Warm Heart of Africa.”

What began as a conversation in 2011 about global access to clean water has grown into a long-term international partnership delivering clean water, education, and sustainable opportunity in rural communities.

Our Impact at a Glance

  • Clean water for rural villages
  • Schools transformed and supported
  • Bicycles improving access to education
  • Long-term community partnerships

Our Story

The Malawi initiative was inspired by Doug and Lori Spesia, whose visits in 2003 and 2005 created lasting relationships and a deep commitment to service.

After Doug’s passing in 2010, that commitment grew into a mission—bringing together Joliet Rotary, local leaders, and community partners to expand opportunity where it is needed most.

Clean Water Projects

Access to clean water was the first critical step.

In 2011, Joliet Rotary partnered with the Rotary Club of Blantyre, Malawi to fund and construct a deep-water well at the Douglas Spesia Centre in Thyolo.

Impact:

  • Safe drinking water for rural communities
  • Reduced risk of cholera, typhoid, and waterborne diseases
  • Foundation for long-term community development

Education & School Development

Recognizing that education drives long-term change, Joliet Rotary expanded its mission to improve schools and support students.

Key efforts include:

  • Renovation of primary and secondary schools
  • Classrooms, desks, and learning materials
  • Teacher housing and training
  • Expanded learning resources

These investments have helped transform under-resourced schools into environments where students can succeed.

These realities drive our continued commitment to improving education.
